At last the day for departure for vacation had arrived! For the last few months all I could think about was taking off in a plane for -- Cancun! Janet, my dearest and closest friend, was to be my companion on this adventure. We had planned this vacation a few months back and now we were finally leaving. I could hardly wait to see Cancun's clear blue skies, crystalline waters and ivory sand beaches. But, at last, we were on our way. Fully packed -- plenty of shorts, bathing suits and high hopes.
The trip to the airport seemed to take hours when in essence it only took about 45 minutes. We arrived -- way ahead of schedule -- to find we had quite a long wait for our departure flight. I guess you could say we were a little anxious and did not even want to take the slightest chance of missing our flight.
We checked our luggage, had our papers validated for entry into Mexico, and patiently settled ourselves in the waiting area. After what seemed like hours, our plane was ready to board. You could feel the excitement around us as we headed for the walkway to the plane. Everyone was talking about their plans for vacation; you could catch a word here and there about swimming, golfing, snorkeling, and sightseeing. Everyone was as excited as we were. And if we caught each other's eye, we would smile with unspoken understanding that we all shared the same feelings.
Finally the plane took off and we were headed for paradise. The first phase of our vacation had begun. We settled down for our three hour trip and suddenly we were both very quiet, each fully engrossed with our thoughts of the days ahead of leisure and fun in the sun. Abruptly, we were brought back to reality by the voice of our flight attendant asking us what we would like to drink. All at once, you could hear again the animated voices of the passengers.
We were finally on our way and what a beautiful, clear day it was. The fluffly white clouds below looked like cotton balls and the sky was the most beautiful celestial shade of blue imaginable. We couldn't have been blessed with better flying conditions. After a while, we drifted into a lazy stupor and lost track of time.
We were brought back to the present by the voice of the Captain alerting us that we were nearing our destination and it was time to fasten our seat belts. I looked out the window and could see the fast approaching countryside and the blue waters surrounding it. What a gorgeous sight it was! We could see plush, green farmland for miles around and in the distance you could make out the skyscrapers of Cancun. What a vista to behold and we would soon be there.
If I caught your attention and are curious as to what happened in Cancun stay tuned for my upcoming release of "My Short Stories Adventures" in late 2024.
